GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Systems Engineer works in the Infrastructure team and is responsible for installing, configuring, supporting, monitoring, testing and troubleshooting hardware and software pertaining to the organization’s IT server infrastructure. This includes planning, organizing and execution of building and implementing server systems and domain infrastructure.  

Coordinating closely with the Director of IT Infrastructure, a Systems Engineer is a member of a team of engineers and support technicians who are responsible 

for managing, maintaining, and troubleshooting the corporate IT server infrastructure equipment & services, and implement the technology direction and strategy to enable Cloud technology adoption, implement and refine cloud current & future state architectures and roadmaps including architecture standards, guidelines, and industry best practices.

A secondary role will be to provide on-site support for the network and telecom infrastructure, working closely with members from the network and telecom team, to provide on-premise support. Additionally, this position oversees: Overall systems management and services, a variety of both in-house and vendor supported applications, platforms and technologies, desktop support, maintaining SLAs, working with the various IT teams and partners for resource scheduling, ensuring all procedures are properly documented and enforced as it pertains to the corporate IT server infrastructure, as well as contributing and implementing continual server improvements.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Plans, implements, installs, operates, and maintains the physical hardware, systems software, enterprise applications, virtualized infrastructure system environments, and cloud-based solution environments

  • Manages and monitors the infrastructure system & environments to ensure the highest level of availability for continued business continuity

  • Installs, configures, and tests operating systems, application software, and system management tools. 

  • Manages asset life-cycles, defines requirements, designs systems, and oversees implementation.

  • Reviews systematic data analytics for optimization and improvements 

  • Evaluates, installs, and maintains software, firmware, and hardware for system & application reliability and compatibility

  • Plans and implements system automation processes for improved efficiencies 

  • Collaborates with internal & external resources on various projects, initiatives, and testing

  • Interfaces with customers to gather information and requirements needs

  • Provides upper-level technical expertise in troubleshooting, problem resolution, and root cause analysis

  • Produces and maintains technical documents, such as guidelines, runbooks, system processes, policies, and procedures

  • Provides technical expertise to IT and operational staff, assists in troubleshooting, problem resolution, and root cause analysis 

  • Provide technical mentoring and guidance to team members to ensure success in the team

  • Supports security measures and standards for infrastructure systems and end-user environments

  • Provide infrastructure systems support for Information Technology teams; act as a liaison with remote teams to troubleshoot and resolve issues

  • Evaluates existing systems and provides technical recommendations and directions to IT support staff

  • Participate in on-call responsibilities in support of a 24 x 7 production environment

Specific Skills and Requirements:

  • 7+ years of experience as an enterprise systems administrator in a client or server environment, including deployment automation tools and managing enterprise licenses

  • 3+ years of experience of architecting, migrating, & supporting cloud infrastructures for enterprise level applications

  • 5+ years of experience with Virtualization: Virtualization Server, Storage, Desktop, Network

  • 3+ years of experience in Citrix solution architecting, implementation, and configuration

  • 5+ years of experience with Infrastructure-Based Processes: Monitoring, Capacity Planning, Facilities Management, Performance Tuning, Asset Management, Disaster Recovery, Data Center support

  • 5+ years of experience with Servers, Infrastructure, Platform Sizing, Infrastructure Cost Reduction

  • 5+ years of experience with legacy system engineering assessments, discovering the build and details surrounding the system in order to re-build it in a new hosted environment

  • Experience with troubleshooting very complex distributed environments pertaining to connectivity and application performance and monitoring tools and offering high-level strategic planning and advice to an entity that will allow for the successful adoption or migration of Cloud-based technologies or services

  • Expert knowledge of infrastructure & cloud environment security models and best practices

  • Expert knowledge of server hardware and software, including knowledge of Microsoft server and services, including: DNS, DHCP, WSUS, SCCM, SCOM, File and Print Services

  • Expert knowledge with Active Directory function, administration and policy controls

  • Expert knowledge of server and client software including knowledge of Windows and the M365 Suite of products (Exchange, OneDrive, SharePoint, Teams, etc.)

  • Proficient in scripting (Batch, WMI, VBScript, PowerShell)

  • Working knowledge of network and telecom hardware, software and technologies.

  • Experience implementing and supporting a broad range of related technologies, including firewalls, network connectivity, permissions and authentication, access control, VPN, auditing, and internet protocols

  • Working knowledge of PC and server hardware and software

  • Working knowledge of server technologies

  • Working knowledge of virtualization technology

  • Working knowledge of compliance initiatives

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills especially the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse user base having varied levels of technical proficiencies

  • Ability to organize, plan and implement work assignments, prioritize competing demands and work under pressure of frequent and tight deadlines

  • Self-motivated with the ability and maturity to be effective & productive in the absence of detailed instructions

  • Demonstrated self-starter and resourceful individual, with experience working in fast paced and dynamic operational settings

  • Strong vendor & supplier relationship management skills

  • Strong teamwork and knowledge sharing skills

  • Ability to lift, move, and adjust computer and peripheral equipment, up to 75 lbs.

  • Ability to occasionally travel domestically if required

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field or related experience

  • Microsoft Certification(s) such as Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer and/or Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert with specialized discipline, preferred

  • Certifications on Cloud Services, including Solutions Architect, Developer, Google Cloud or Azure are highly desirable (as Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer and/or Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert with specialized discipline)

  • At least 5 years of experience with server virtualization

  • At least 3 years of experience with any of the following technologies: AWS, VMWare, Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud Platform

  • At least 7 years of experience as an enterprise systems administrator
